What Is Model United Nations (MUN)?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation in which students role-play as diplomats


representing different countries in United Nations committees. It is designed to help young people understand international relations, global issues, and the working of the United Nations while developing important life skills such as public speaking, research, negotiation, and critical thinking.

In an MUN conference, each participant is assigned a country and a committee, such as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Security Council (UNSC), World Health Organization (WHO), or United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Students research their assigned country’s foreign policies, national interests, and stance on the agenda topics. During the conference, delegates debate issues, deliver speeches, negotiate with other countries, and work together to draft resolutions that propose solutions to global problems.


How Does Model United Nations Work?

An MUN conference usually begins with an opening ceremony, followed by committee sessions. In committee, delegates give formal speeches, participate in moderated and unmoderated caucuses, and collaborate to create draft resolutions. These resolutions are discussed, amended, and finally voted upon. The goal is not to “win” an argument, but to reach diplomatic and practical solutions through cooperation and discussion.

Students must follow parliamentary procedures, similar to real UN meetings, which helps them understand how international diplomacy functions in the real world.
